One More Time is the 32nd event[1] in Goddess of Victory: Nikke.
The story revolves around Bay trying to win a cheerleading contest, even after a massive setback early into the competition.
Synopsis[]
In a shocking twist, Bay, the leader of the Ark's cheerleading squad, attains the lowest score in the squad's history during a cheerleading contest qualifier. In an attempt to win the championship, Bay starts practicing with Clay.

Prologue - All-Time Worst Score[]
The host of the Ark Cheerleading Championship addresses a roaring crowd as he goes over the rules; each team has 3 minutes to show off their moves, with the judges giving a score out of 100 based on cheer, audience engagement, audience reaction, and tumbling. Though the criteria seems harsh, the judges have a good reason to be stringent. The winner of today's contest not only gets thousands of dollars in cash prizes, but also gets the opportunity to be a part of next month's Ark Sports Festival, the biggest sporting event in the colony. Over the crowd's cheers, the host announces the first team...
Backstage, Bay and Clay of Rewind are just 5 minutes away from being up to bat. The latter is a tad nervous since this is her very first competition, but she's excited to be able to cheer as a member of Rewind. The two divvy up tasks, with Bay handling the cheers while Clay engages the audience. It's an arrangement that works in everyone's favor, since despite her best efforts to mitigate it, Bay gets uneasy when people overly focus on her. Clay sees a chance to briefly tease her leader by staring at her a bit before going into her stretches. With renewed determination to win this contest (and with it Rewind's renown), the two cheerleaders step onto the stage...
At first, things seem to be okay. Bay is keeping her nerves in check, and Clay, despite a hiccup here and there, is keeping the audience engaged and focused on her. During the performance, the judges look on and talk between themselves. They commend Bay for her charisma and skill, lamenting that her reputation previously tanked thanks to some rumors that were falsified about her. As for the new member Clay, they find her showmanship a decent counterbalance to her lackluster technique, but...
After the show, Rewind pats themselves on the back for a job well done. Despite a few minor errors, they're confident that they've got this in the bag. After all, in any competition Rewind has participated, they've never gotten any less than 90 points. Finally, the board lights up showing the scores of the teams, and Rewind is taken aback...at how low theirs is. 65 points? That's not just a low score. That's the lowest score that Rewind has ever gotten...
Problem[]
The protagonist slinks into his room to rest, having finished today's meeting earlier than scheduled. Unfortunately for him, he finds Bay and Clay pacing around the room muttering about the dilemma they're in, wondering what was wrong with their routine. Eventually, the two finally notice "Coach" is here and take note of his presence. The protagonist asks about their situation, and though he's somewhat familiar with the Ark Cheerleading Championship, he could use a refresher.
Every spring, the cheerleading teams of the Ark gather to compete in a big contest. The top five teams in the prelims move on to the finals, where the winner is crowned champion. Said champion gets a cash prize and the privilege of performing in the Ark Sports Festival as a main feature. In fact, being a part of the ASF was what put Rewind on the map in the first place, though it's fallen from grace due to recent events. This was Bay's big chance to get her team back on top after the fuss she's had to deal with, but that seems like a shaky prospect after they got the lowest score in the squad's career, which was only barely enough to scrape by the first round. If they can't fix whatever's tanking their scores before the finals, their chances of winning (and Rewind's odds of a comeback) will go up in smoke.
With the finals only two weeks away, Rewind is desperate to get this sorted out ASAP. As part of that, they want the protagonist to watch their cheer routine as an observer and see if he can spot what's giving them grief. When he agrees to assist, Bay takes the group to the practice room so they'll have space to move...
Stepping into Rewind's training space, the protagonist is surprised to see so many different uniforms on display. Bay explains that while uncommon, some competitions provide or specify a uniform that contestants must wear. Carrying on, Bay brings a chair for the protagonist to sit in, explaining that he needs to watch their cheer for how they incorporate stage performance and showmanship for audience engagement. It's quite complex compared to the typical image of waving around pompoms most have of cheerleading. For the purpose of this exercise, the protagonist will take the role of an audience member Rewind is attempting to engage with their cheering, with Bay activating the music as Rewind takes their positions...
The routine seems to go well at first, despite a slight hiccup as Clay loses the beat. The protagonist plays his role well, clapping and cheering according to Clay's prompting. The next sets of maneuvers go without any issues. If anything, the protagonist is starting to overload from Rewind's infectious energy, feeling physically energized as he cheers along with an invisible crowd...
When the routine ends, the protagonist is a sweaty mess from getting overly excited. When asked for feedback, he wonders if Rewind can handle any criticism he has. Though they're a little uncertain, Bay manages to steel herself in the name of improvement. She and Clay await his critiques with bated breath, leading to...nothing scathing?
The protagonist notes that despite some minor mistakes on Clay's part, he believes the showmanship she displayed more than compensates for it, while Bay's enthusiasm ensured that the performance from start to end was all-gas-no-brakes. Rewind interprets it as the protagonist finding nothing wrong with their performance, and while the compliments are heartening to hear, it's not quite what they're looking for. If their performance was so stellar, then their score would've been a lot higher than 65. Scores don't lie, after all...right?
The protagonist suggests getting another person to observe their routine, someone who's an avid fan of cheerleading. A lightbulb goes off in Bay's head as someone comes to mind...
Solution[]
In the Gym, Folkwang and Epinel are shooting the breeze while Rumani is away. Then the protagonist and Rewind step in, wondering where the Nepenthe leader is. Turns out with the Ark Sports Festival coming soon, Rumani is out and about training for the big day. After being apprised of the situation, the athletic squad is more than happy to offer whatever assistance they can. Nepenthe and Rewind are on good terms with one another, often cheering each other on in their respective competitions.
After seeing the performance, Folkwang has nothing but praise, but Epinel notes that something feels...missing, for a lack of a better word. Folkwang agrees to the notion, and after some time narrows it down; Rewind doesn't have enough people in it. It's one thing for just Bay and Clay to do their thing in a small stage like the Gym, but out there on the field of a sporting event? The two of them alone will make it feel empty and underwhelming.
That being said, the shortage of members is the only real issue. Otherwise, as far as Nepenthe can tell, Rewind's routine is exemplar. With a look of determination on her face, Bay resolves to find at least one new member for her team, win the championship, and get Rewind back on top...
The trio discusses their plan as they wile around the Outpost. Despite the protagonist's suggestions, doing an audition is an uncertain prospect. Rewind held one just months ago, and Clay was literally the only participant at the time. Due to the PR disaster that the squad suffered a while back, everyone except Bay quit, and anyone looking from the outside can see the team is already one foot in the grave.[2] Despite that, Clay auditioned for Rewind even after countless rejections, and Bay denies that her cohort got in by virtue of being the only applicant. However clumsy she is with keeping a beat, Bay can tell Clay has a knack for working a crowd, as the protagonist has seen and felt. Before this whole mess, Bay was largely kept out of the loop on auditions beyond the final judgement, so she didn't even know Clay was constantly applying and getting rejected. Clay simply takes heart in the fact that she's finally a member of Rewind, and presses everyone to chin up and do what it takes to get the team's crown back.
With that said, they still need to figure out how to find and vet members for the team. Hosting an open audition would take too much time and resources before the finals. Contacting people directly would be faster, but neither Bay nor Clay really knows anyone who they could ask to join. Luckily, the protagonist knows a few people here and there, volunteering his connections to find a third member. Though his confident veneer does wonders for Rewind's morale, internally he has little clue who he'd actually try to recruit for this task. He decides to ask for some criteria before putting out some feelers, just so he has an idea of what he's looking for.
Bay explains that the new cheerleader must be someone with stamina. For obvious reasons, they can't take someone who'll get tired and bow out mid-performance. Second, they need some level of flexibility to pull off some of the maneuvers they're expected to do. Finally, they'll need courage, especially since some of the moves will involve tumbling or being airborne. Clay hasn't anything to add, so the protagonist muses on two pairs of Nikke he knows that may fit the bill...
Blanc and Noir have stamina, flexibility, and courage in spades thanks to their work as dancers for Coin Rush. They're interested in cheerleading despite some anxiety from Noir, but the times just don't line up since 777 is already booked for a big event in two weeks. Tia and Naga have prior experience cheerleading from school events, and given Clay's...figure...Tia decides that it might not be as taxing as she fears. While Dazzling Pearl is interested in giving it a go, they have exams in two weeks, and have to put all their attention into studying especially because of what happens when Vocational School students fail an exam. Mildly dejected, Rewind and the protagonist accept the declinations and move on...
Bay and Clay had a feeling this wouldn't be easy, but to have such appealing first choices turn out to be busts is a major raincloud. The protagonist insists that there's still a chance as he moves on to his next choices...
Diesel might be a good fit due to her previous training to be an idol, and her tone-deafness won't pose an issue since singing isn't a mandatory part of cheerleading. Unfortunately, as he and Rewind find out, Diesel somehow has a sense of rhythm worse than Clay's. The idea of Emma being a cheerleader is quite...appealing mainly for two massive reasons, but an attempt to find her simply leads to Eunhwa, who shoos out the protagonist and Rewind within minutes of conversing.
Time passes, offers are made and rejected, and Rewind is no closer to a successful recruit than they'd been at the start of this. Just as Clay is about to suggest the protagonist become Rewind's third member, the commander hears the voice of his greatest hope; Poli.
New Member[]
Having been apprised of the situation, A.C.P.U. is willing to lend their assistance, though their actual capability to do so is...questionable. However eager she is to help, Miranda's body creaks and squeaks as she contorts her body in a terrible parody of Rewind's routine, one that culminates in audibly breaking her arm and sending her to the Repair Center. Quiry is concerned that her vision disability may pose an issue, and also bows out.
With a tinge of desperation, Bay and Clay bow their heads before Poli and plead for her help in winning the competition. The protagonist adds his own beseeching added to the mix as Poli tries to wriggle out citing time constraints, only for Miranda and Quiry to remind her of her impending vacation. Turns out Poli has accrued so much PTO that she's being ordered to go on vacation. Which means that in two days' time, she will conveniently be completely free for the next two weeks. Poli delegates police work for the next few weeks to her squad and agrees to meet with Rewind tomorrow so they can start practicing. Spirits renewed, Bay and Clay gear up to get back in the saddle with their cheer practice.
The next day, Poli emerges from the changing room clad in cheerleader attire. While she's somewhat unsure of how it looks on her, the protagonist helps allay her concerns by remarking how it makes her look like a puppy great. The trio notices that Clay is running late, which Bay chalks up to her burning the midnight oil practicing again. Despite the Rewind leader's best efforts, it would seem Clay is so wiped out from her night practice that she's not responding to any messages...
Musing that standing around waiting would be a poor use of time, Bay decides to walk Poli through the steps of their routine, which the police dog Nikke follows with ease. Becoming bored of standing and watching, the protagonist joins in after a while.
Some time later, Clay careens through the door, apologizing for being so late (1 hour 40 minutes by the protagonist's record) and sleeping through all of her alarms. After accepting Clay's apologies, Bay goes over the current situation. Poli is pretty much everything Rewind asked for in a cheerleader, with stamina and flexibility to spare. They just need to keep at it for the next two weeks and they'll be all set for the finals.
For the next few hours, Bay, Clay, and Poli practice their routine, with the protagonist playing the part of the audience. Unfortunately, Clay keeps slipping up and making mistakes, moreso than she usually does at any rate. The protagonist chalks it up to Clay overdoing it with yesterday's practice, and Bay decides to call it a day here. Poli is keeping pace with the rest, so they can spare today to let Clay's body and mind rejuvenate. With Rewind's second-newest member both thankful and apologetic, the curtain falls peacefully on Rewind's first session with Poli...
The Divide[]
10 days remain until the cheerleading finals. Over the course of practice, Bay is advising Clay and Poli on where they can improve. Hours pass by as the team starts becoming more cohesive...
When the day's practice is done, Bay thanks Poli and the protagonist for their participation. Poli is eager to keep at it with how excited cheering gets her, and the protagonist, though winded, is of the same sentiment. Though Bay has to point out a lot of places where Clay needs to improve, morale remains high as Rewind calls it a day...
The protagonist trudges back to the Outpost, yearning to do nothing more than flop onto his bed after all the exercise he's been doing lately. Then he notices that he forgot to change out of his exercise shoes, and now he has to go back to the practice room to get his normal shoes back. On the way, he hears a voice and a crashing sound coming from the practice room, peering inside to find Clay...
The Rewind Nikke is still practicing her parts of the routine, and keeps tumbling to the floor. Despite the bumps and bruises she still wants to get better at the parts Bay told her to work on, so the protagonist leaves her be with a simple advisory against overdoing it. Even as he gets his shoes and leaves, the lights in the practice room stay on throughout the night...
The next day, Rewind and the protagonist are once again waiting on Clay. It's 1:40 PM, which is a problem considering their planned meetup time was 11 AM. Hearing that Clay was spending the night practicing again, Bay notes that her teammate has been oversleeping with alarming frequency as of late, going silent as the protagonist regales how he found her when he was retrieving his shoes...
As Clay barges in spewing apologies, Bay asks her when she went back to the dorm last night, which turns out to be 3 AM. As Clay rushes to get ready for practice, the protagonist can't help but notice a murky expression on Bay's face. Bay brushes off the concern, claiming she should be understanding of her teammate's desire to improve at all costs...
Practice goes poorly compared to the previous sessions, with Clay repeatedly fumbling the same move that she previously had handled. A feeling of tension arises as Bay calls for a breather, with Poli whispering as much to the protagonist...
Outburst[]
7 days left until the finals, and the mood only gets worse. With every mistake Clay makes, Bay gets more and more terse with her words. Poli warns they should probably intervene before tensions go from boiling to eruption, which the protagonist agrees with. He tries to get Bay to lighten up, but the Rewind leader ignores him in lieu of going off on Clay.
She's getting increasingly fed-up with Clay being late to practice and making the same mistakes over and over. At first she was willing to forgive it, given her knowledge of Clay's all-nighter practice sessions. But with seemingly no signs of improvement, before the finals that could make or break Rewind's comeback? Bay almost accuses Clay of not even practicing during her late-night sessions...only to see Clay tearing up, freeze, and call for a breather as she steps outside. The protagonist leaves Poli with comforting Clay while he goes after Bay...
He finds the Rewind leader staring into the sky. Bay notices his presence and apologizes for the unsightly display she showed him and Poli. She confesses that...she's tired, and she's felt like giving up. That what she's been asking of herself and the team is too much to handle. The protagonist assures her that she's been working hard at this, hard enough that giving up her would be the biggest mistake she could make. She's doing as well as she can in these circumstances and just need to believe that. The moment she doesn't and goes astray? The rest of Rewind would fall apart without their leader. He promises that if she ever feels overwhelmed, she can come see him and talk it over. Bay thanks him for his consideration, looking noticeably brighter than before...
The next day, there's...not hostility, but a feeling of unease still permeates the practice room. The protagonist tries to lighten the mood as the team's coach, making cheers and inviting everyone to grab dinner after practice. Poli tries to back him up, but neither Bay nor Clay seem enthused with the ideas. The passion and adrenaline that used to suffuse their meetups has been replaced by an awkward tension...
Bay declares that today's goal is to get through a routine without any slip-ups. The protagonist turns on the music, prompting Rewind to begin their routine. Everything seems to go fine at first...until Clay makes a misstep and falls over, fumbling the same step she did yesterday. Bay chides Clay for messing up and tells her to move on to the next step. The atmosphere starts to become heavy again for the rest of practice...
After practice, Clay is first to bolt from the room, cutting off any attempts by Bay to advise her on areas of improvement. Bay apologizes to Poli and the protagonist for bringing down the mood like she's been lately, something she sees as unfitting of a leader. Though Poli takes it in stride, Bay sees this is particularly unfair to Poli, given the latter is taking time out of her schedule to assist. Poli assures that even A.C.P.U. has had rough patches like this, inviting Bay to sit down and chat. Something the squad hasn't really done since they started practicing for the finals...
Sitting in the practice room, the protagonist asks Bay how long this stand-off with Clay is going to go on. Bay is aware that she should be the one to take the initiative and reconcile, to take Clay's mistakes in stride. But she doesn't know how to do that. It feels like she doesn't know how to talk to Clay anymore, and it's really bothering her as the leader of Rewind. Poli commiserates with the sentiment. As the leader of A.C.P.U.'s Nikke squad, Poli is no stranger to the burdens of leadership. It's easy to say that logically, a leader must be a guiding force that nudges their subordinates in the direction of self-improvement. Actually trying to exercise that when one's emotions are tangling up matters isn't so easy, as the heart takes the reins when the brain should be...
Poli notes that Clay's knees have been looking quite scuffed these days, likely a sign of her repeated attempts (and failures) in her private practice. Regardless of whether or not she's making noticeable progress, no one can deny Clay's been putting in the hours and then some. It's important for Bay to understand this, as Rewind isn't going to be able to win the finals just because Poli's keeping pace. The protagonist assents, as Rewind needs to win this as a team, meaning internal conflict like this can't be allowed to fester. The two urge Bay to have a honest talk with Clay, and clear out this problem before it leads to irreversible damage.
Bay suddenly stands up and admits they have a point. She's never had a serious talk with Clay up till now, but that'll have to change if they're going to get past this. She thanks Poli and the protagonist for the pep-talk, and steps outside. Though they have every confidence Bay will be able to overcome this and make a stronger Rewind out of it, Poli advises the protagonist to tag along, just in case...
Rewind[]
Knocking on the door to Clay's room, Bay receives only silence for an answer. The protagonist comes in after she tries calling again, and the two note that in all likelihood Clay is elsewhere. If she's not here, and she left the practice room already, then the only place she could be is...
The protagonist follows Bay out to the stadium, and sure enough, Clay is practicing by herself, bemoaning her difficulties in following the routine. Apparently Clay practices in the stadium when her mind feels heavy, imagining the crowd in the stands to help her focus. Seeing the newer cheerleader smack her legs and try to get them to work, Bay asks the protagonist if...if he thinks she's a bad person...
Bay laments how awful she's been to Clay as of late. She knew the other cheerleader had her issues and was giving 110% to fix them, but all she did was get on her case for every misstep. Hours pass as the two simply watch Clay keel over to the ground over and over...
As night falls, Clay notices how dark it's gotten and collapses one last time. She frets over being late to the meetup again, considering every prospect from multiple alarms to just sleeping in the practice room. Shaking off her worries to squeeze one last practice out of herself, Clay stands up...only for Bay to step in and point out an area of improvement.
Ignoring Clay wondering why she's here, Bay demonstrates a more effective way to perform the steps and invites Clay to try. Even as Clay messes up and falls to the ground, Bay remains calm, coaching her junior through every step of the performance...
Their practice goes on until finally, Clay can successfully perform the step that was giving her so much trouble. Clay wraps Bay in a tight hug and profusely thanks her for her help. Bay takes her chance to apologize to Clay for what happened yesterday. As leader, she should've been more reasonable and understanding that Clay was as serious about winning the competition as she was. But she let the stakes get to her head, and assumed her junior wasn't as invested as she was. Bay admits her behavior was completely unacceptable as Rewind's leader, and bows her head in apology.
In response, Clay gets flustered, trying to get Bay to stop. She admits that she made a lot of mistakes, and Bay had every right to get mad at her. But what tore her up more than that was the fact that her practice up till now seemed to bear little fruit. She's aware of how much is riding on this competition, and she wants to see Rewind climb back to the top as much as anyone else. So the idea that the team would lose and end up sinking into ignominy because she couldn't pull her own weight...makes her start to tear up...
After Bay and Clay apologize to one another, the latter finally registers the protagonist's presence, as he's been here the whole time. The two also note that he's crying, despite his insistence to the contrary. After a few minutes to allow the waterworks to collectively stop, Clay thanks Bay for taking the lead in reconciling their spat. In response, Bay asks Clay if she knows where Rewind got its name from...
Though there is a move in cheerleading routines dubbed "the rewind," that's not actually the inspiration behind the name. Rewind is named after the word itself, of the act of turning back time. In the spirit of that name, Bay asks Clay to go back to the start together, and prepare for the competition one step at a time. Moved beyond measure, Clay bursts into tears again, prompting a flustered Bay to ask the protagonist what to do. At his advice, she takes a tissue and wipes at Clay's tears, but unfortunately, Clay's the kind of person to cry harder when people comfort her. Bay ends up spending a long time hugging and patting the sobbing Clay...
Rewind, One More Time[]
With 3 days left until the finals, Rewind is putting in more effort than ever. The tension from before is gone, Clay is perfectly executing the moves Bay coached her, and spirits couldn't be higher. Poli is relieved at how much brighter things have gotten, now that everyone's on the same page...
2 day until the finals. Rewind has spent 10 hours practicing today, and a tired Clay and Poli are awaiting Bay's return. Soon enough, Bay barges into the room, carrying a load of snacks to reenergize the team before they get back to practice. There's a little bit of everything, so the team loads up on calories and then starts up again...
1 day before the finals. Bay instructs everyone to go over one last move, getting a spirited agreement from everyone, even the protagonist who had nothing else to do at the moment.
Finally, the big day arrives. The contest host addresses a roaring crowd that's even bigger than the turnout for the prelims. The finals will use the same rules and criteria as the prelims, so he skips over the exposition before going over the teams that will be competing...
Backstage, Rewind is filled with a nervous yet excited mood before they go up. They're eager to show the fruits of their labor, that they've poured their heart and soul into. Just before the squad hits the stage and the protagonist goes to the stands, the team huddles up for one last cheer. In keeping with the squad's desire to reclaim their crown, they shout "Rewind! One more time!" and step out...
As Bay kicks off the routine with a bang, a crowd screams their approval for the shining Rewind...
The routine goes off without a hitch. Afterwards, Rewind's nervous excitement becomes plain nerves as they anxiously await the announcement of the scores. Keeping a steady demeanor, Bay thanks her teammates and the protagonist for their hard work. Finally, the scores come out, and Rewind has gotten a whopping 95 points. A far improvement from the dismal 65 of the prelims, but then they look at the ranking number next to it, and their faces fall. Rewind lost the top spot by a measly 3 points...
Contrasting Clay and Poli's crestfallen expressions, Bay is...calm. She doesn't deny it would've been nice to win the championship and get the team back on top, but considering how they improved from their abysmal performance in the prelims? She's willing to walk off today's loss and look towards next year's championship. Poli is the first to cheer up, promising to join again next year if called upon. Clay proposes taking a photo of this moment to memorialize it, getting a unanimous approval. Sadly, the protagonist is saddled with the photographer role, so he has to remain absent from the picture.
The photo is...certainly an interesting one. Poli is quite literally sandwiched between the two taller and more endowed Nikkes, leaving her suspended above the ground. With the press of a shutter, the beginning of Rewind's comeback, however small a start, is immortalized in film...
Some time later, Rewind convenes at a restaurant, with Bay footing the bill for dinner. The protagonist briefly jokes that he's going to suck Bay's wallet dry, while Poli and Clay are just happy to be here. Though the team is still sore about the narrow loss they suffered, they take solace in how synchronized they were throughout the performance. Poli is excited to do this cheerleading thing again, though her primary job is still a police officer, so she can't permanently join Rewind.
The protagonist then asks Bay about Rewind's next move, which is going to be participating in the Nikke track and field event. It's not as big as the Ark Sports Festival, but it'll serve as a decent stepping stone for their eventual climb to the top. They might not be able to reclaim their throne in a single stroke like they planned, but they're not going to give up on it either. Poli laments that she has to go back to her police work and can't join them, but Bay assures that this was something she planned to do with just herself and Clay, even with the protagonist offering his own brand of assistance.
Bay and Clay look to each other, and fire themselves up to take it back one more time...
Hard Mode Epilogue - The Best Cheerleader[]
A few months later, Rewind runs into Nepenthe again at the Nikke track and field. Epinel laments the loss at the Cheerleading Championship, but finds it nice to see the cheer squad is still keeping at it. Folkwang reveals that not only did Rewind win the cheerleading competition here by a landslide, but also got chosen as the best team by the officials. After a bit of back-and-forth courtesy of Bay and Clay passing credit to each other, Nepenthe adds their observations on Rewind's cohesion as of late.
Epinel notes that despite the stage being a big one, she couldn't really perceive a sense of emptiness when Rewind stepped up. Bay and Clay were so in sync that they alone were enough to fill the void with their cheers. After a little more chatter, Nepenthe walks off to prepare for their own competitions, bantering about what they'll do with their prize money...
Bay notes that they're slated to go up on stage again, and nudges Clay to make preparations. Before they go, they belt out their chant again, the words "Rewind! One more time!" propelling them up the stairs, and with it, one step closer to their victory...
