The Protagonist (also known as the Commander, see section below) is the main protagonist of Goddess of Victory: Nikke, and is the player character through which most of the game's story and events are witnessed. He is a newly-graduated Commander from the military academy who would later be put in charge of the Nikke squad "Counters." His physical appearance was only seen in promotional materials or referenced by the in-universe plushies made in his likeness. Story wise, his first full in-game depiction comes in a cutscene in Chapter 32.
Profile[]
The Commander of the Counters is a male commander of the military forces of the Ark. He has no recollections of his past, and can't even remember if he has any family.
He graduated from the military academy writing a thesis like other graduates, although his graduation thesis was considered terrible.[1] Regardless, he can only vaguely recall faint echoes of his time at the military academy before he was sent out to the surface. On occasions, he receives visions of talking to a little girl in a hospital.
The Commander is a fairly tall man with sharp features, and typically wears the Ark commander's dark brown military uniform.

Snow White, Crow, D, K, and Arcana prefer calling the protagonist whatever name the player has entered, while Eunhwa simply refers to them with insults or profanity when not calling them "Weakling." Sakura will call the protagonist by name while adding a "-kun" honorific. In the "License to Kill" and "Kill the Lord" events, the protagonist uses the undercover name 'Steve.' Frima eschews a name or nickname in lieu of simple greetings like "Hey" and "Yo." Elegg adds the Mr. title when addressing the protagonist. Occasionaly, Mecha Shifty will refer to the commander as "Inferior Human", though this is how she normally refers to humans and Nikkes. The general public views the protagonist as "The Ark's Final Hope." In Diesel's character story, some children call him "Elevator Bro." In the Brief Encounter: The Elevator Ghost, he calls himself 'Mix.' While part of the Thieves of Justice, he goes by Phantom Commander.
Personality[]
The commander's personality is by and large a blank slate, save for a strong sense of justice and empathy for both humans (except Syuen, for good reason) and Nikkes (except Crow). He is, however, prone to bouts of eccentricity when it comes to empathizing or bonding with Nikkes, from dressing like a polar bear for Neve to becoming a cheesy Hollywood-style producer for Noise.
The commander's abilities are surprisingly varied, even disregarding character bond episodes. Despite being a recent graduate of the academy, he is able to take on a Blacksmith Rapture with only two Nikkes, overcome a swarm of Raptures to escape encirclement, take multiple gunshot wounds' worth of pain from Mihara, face off against Chatterbox multiple times and survive, and more.
In a rare subversion of standard Commander behavior, the protagonist does not treat Nikkes as if they are replaceable machines, nor does he abuse them if he gets distressed or frustrated. If anything, the protagonist tends to spoil Nikkes in the eyes of the average Ark denizen, giving them food and drink beyond the necessary, buying them gifts, and treating them like actual people. This has earned him the affection (overt or otherwise) of multiple Nikkes across various manufacturers and squads.
For some reason, Nikkes under the protagonist's command are able to exhibit combat strength beyond previously recorded figures. Those that have attempted to study it (Maxwell) believe there is more to it than merely being a psychological anchor for Nikkes.
Trivia[]
- In the Chapter 1 animation and some promotional art, it can be assumed that the commander is male.
- Due to inconsistencies in dubbing and translation, the game will sometimes use "they" and other forms of ambiguous language after previously referring to the protagonist with "he."
- The protagonist has the same blood type as Deputy Chief Andersen. As of Chapter 20, it's revealed that this blood type is Rh X, the blood that contains Vapaus.
- When Anderson asks if sharing a blood type is a coincidence in Chapter 15 - Valuable Blood. He will respond to "Brother?" as if the Commander was making a joke and to "Father?" by pointing out that "I'm a single man," neither of which outright deny a possible familial relationship and only deflect further relationship inquiries away.
- In Chapter 34, according to Neon, the protagonist has earned several aliases from residents in the Ark as:
- Ark's Final Hope
- Hero of the Ark
